Gossamer veil dancing is an ancient art form inspired by the Biblical story of Salome the daughter of a Roman Emperor.
At Herod's birthday celebration the beautiful Salome danced, peeling off each of seven veils.
Herod was so pleased with her dance, he made an oath to give her whatever she desired. She replied:
"I will that thou give me the head of John the Baptist."
According to Mark's gospel Salome's mother bore a grudge against John for claiming Herod's marriage to her was unlawful.
