Roman Cage Vase 1st Century AD.

There is a dispute among scholars as to how these amazing vessels were created.

One theory describes a Roman glass technique called diatretum, where thick walled blanks were cut back to create the complex design.

Another suggests the cups were cut from a two shelled plaster and quartz powder mold.

Since plaster does not stick to glass and becomes brittle after contact with hot glass it could then be easily removed.

There are many examples in modern design that contain elements similar to those used in this 2000 year old vase.
