Ancient Bowl  Item 1640

Check Box for engraving

This ancient Eastern Mediterranean bowl dates back to the 2nd-1st Century BC.

The discovery of glass chemistry may have been an accident.

The theory is that sand had found its way into an overheated pottery kiln.

It is believed that quartz in the sand combined with soda and formed a glaze on a ceramic.

This discovery informed ancient craftsmen and artists that soda, melted with sand, enable silica (quartz) to melt at a lower temperature.

The magnitude of this discovery and its impact on civilization can only be appreciated when one considers the thousands of glass products produced in the modern world.

You can probably reach out and touch a piece of glass from where you are sitting as you read this.
