We received a request to create a special glass with the colors of Crater Lake, an hour's drive from our studio in Southern Oregon.
The specifications called for glass with the depth and luminosity of the famous caldera.
Our best color artist worked through a variety of colors and effects till this truly magical design finally emerged.
We visit the Crater year round and few experiences can match touring the rim in winter on snow machines.
In 5700 BC the Klamath people witnessed the collapse of Mount Mazama in a volcanic eruption that blew 3,500 ft. off the mountain.
They used the resulting caldera in vision quests by performing dangerous tasks on the vertical caldera walls. Those who survived were considered great spirits.
On June 12, 1853 explorers discovered the vibrant indigo caldera they named "Deep Blue Lake."
The famous "Old Man of the Lake" is a full-sized tree that has bobbed vertically in the lake for more than a century.
It is the deepest lake in the US (1,943 ft), seventh deepest in the world and averages 44 feet of snow per year.
