We created a new series of Waterspout incorporating both light transmission and refraction in the same blown sculpture.
The technique offers designs with a nearly unlimited variety of images and viewing angles.
We build the designs in alternating layers of clear, opaque white and transparent glass colors.
The technique captures light within the vase wall, which then refracts through the multiple layers of clear and transparent glass.
Light also reflects off the hidden white layer and transmits through the color illuminating it.
The sculptures produce a glow in ambient light creating a variety of effects at different viewing angles.
The third image on the left shows an example of the Star Sapphire effect when separate light sources are used to illuminate the design.
The effect is produced by trailing threads of clear glass onto the vase wall which magnifies and bends the underlying colors.
