Diamond dust is a weather phenomenon similar to thin fog but made up of tiny ice crystals.

It's most common in the Arctic and Antarctica, but can occur anywhere very cold air mixes with overlying warmer moist air.

Every winter I spend a few evenings skiing at Mt. Ashland.

After the mountain closed late one night I grabbed a sandwich from the truck and walked out onto the snow.

The temperature was six degrees and in the air was continuous sparkling stream of diamond ice crystals blowing past in perfect silence.

The night sky was filled with stars and diamond dust becoming a moment in time I'll never forget.
